Game of Thrones Scot says Tory shambles makes hit show look like tea party

Iain Glen thinks Boris Jonson and co need to stop ‘disappearing up their own rears’ and deal with bigger issues like the refugee crisis.

As Boris Johnson and his Tory cronies play their own version of Game of Thrones, one of the show’s stars has challenged them to stop “disappearing up their own rears” and start dealing with bigger issues like the refugee crisis.

Edinburgh actor Iain Glen, 57, spent a decade being part of the political manoeuvrings in GoT. And he is as sick as the rest of us of watching the Tories going through their own bloodless version of the hit TV show.

From Friday, he and fellow Thrones star Lena Headey, who played Queen Cersei, star in The Flood. Human Rights Watch have described the film as an “accurate portrayal of the refugee crisis”.

Iain, who played Ser Jorah Mormont in all eight series of GoT, hopes the new film will make people realise there’s more to politics that Brexit.

He said: “I’m not massively political but I’m overwhelmed at the incompetence of the current politics in Westminster. It’s breathtaking.

“I am so f****** disinterested at the Tory party trying to sort themselves out and work out who is going to lead them.

“The current crop look so completely incompetent I wouldn’t wish any of them on any of us.

“Then, look at the Labour Party. For God’s sake, just tell us what you think. No one knows. I’m so disinterested in British politics and so disinterested in how utterly insular we have become.

“I’m for any film that tries to say, ‘Guys, there are bigger things going on here. There are things you really could be properly engaged with if you stopped disappearing up your own rears.’Scot Richard Madden admits feeling ‘broken’ and considered quitting acting.

“The Flood is a very important subject that’s been buried by how insular UK politics has become.”

Released in cinemas a day after World Refuge Day, The Flood features Lena, who is also executive producer on the film, as an immigration officer.

Iain plays her boss and Humans star Ivanno Jeremiah has the role of Haile, who makes a perilous 3100-mile journey to the Calais Jungle, only to be caught getting into the UK illegally in a lorry.

While The Flood may not have the global reach of GoT, it has a global message and Iain hopes it can do its bit in changing a system that is out-dated and cruel.

He added: “It’s a very human drama and gives the outsider an insight into what people have to go through, from the traumatic lives they are trying to escape from and then the cold bureaucracy of the UK process.

“It’s so hard for us who have always enjoyed a relative quality of life to get our heads round what it must be like to need to flee your homeland.

“I would love to have a system in place which more efficiently and humanely targets those people who need to find safety in a new country and for us to be able to offer that.”

Iain teamed up with Lena to make The Flood before shooting the final series eight of GoT.

Their characters only had one big scene together on Thrones – when all the parties came together to see the White Walker.

But the pair became friends after bumping into each other in the Irish base camp or in the hotels the cast were put up in.

While we are used to Iain in Jorah’s infamous tattered yellow shirt, he’s in a shirt and tie for The Flood.

“It’s actually very unlike me,” he laughed, “I don’t like wearing ties.”

You can’t have a chat with Iain without talking about Thrones. While he was already a well-kent face, starring in Lara Croft: Tomb Raider and the Resident Evil franchise as baddie Dr Isaacs, Iain knows GoT has solidified his success on a global stage.

Thrones didn’t finish on the high many hoped it would. You could argue that the fourth episode of series eight, The Long Night, which saw Jorah protect his beloved Daenerys (Emilia Clarke) from the dead was the high watermark of the series.

The final two episodes weren’t as well received, with a petition even being launched calling for series eight to be remade.

Iain shrugged: “Globally, I thought the petition was quite small compared with the amount of people who watched it.

“I’m pretty critical and I had no problems with it. I thought there was some exceptional moments in the last series. But I think people felt they owned the show and decided what the ending would be and where the story went and how the characters should have behaved.

“It’s indicative of how much people felt it belonged to them and how much they cared for it. You can’t please everyone all the time.”

After the series finished, GoT writer Dave Hill said Jorah, protector and friend to Daenerys, the Mother of Dragons, was originally meant to head back north at the end, alongside Jon Snow (Kit Harington).

But it would have been too complicated and in the end, Jorah got the noble death he had craved, defending the woman he loved.

Iain said: “ I thought I was given the perfect ending. I was very happy.”

The funeral scene was also a huge fan favourite, especially when Daenerys whispered to a dead Jorah.

The actors are the only ones who know what was said – and they will never reveal it.

The pair became very close during filming because of the amount of scenes they had together, but also when Emilia survived two brain aneurysms in 2011 after the first series of Thrones.

“She was so strong,” Iain said. “She had real scares but she’s an amazing lady. We are still very close.”

With three decades of work under his belt, Iain isn’t moping about the loss of Thrones.

While he felt “very bereft” as he walked away from the set, he has just carried on an already stellar career.

There is GoT memorabilia around the London home he shares with wife Charlotte and daughters Mary and Juliet.

Iain chuckled: “I have some action figures who occupy unusual roles in my house. One is guarding the downstairs toilet, pointing his sword at the toilet roll.”

He has lived in London since his time at drama college but visits Edinburgh three or four times a year to see his elderly parents.

And his kids are definitely Scottish.

“My wife is English but I keep calling the kids ‘utterly Scottish’, much to her upset.

“I often speak to them in broad Scottish and they have to work out what I’m saying, like, ‘Dinnae fash yersel’.”

‘Jack Taylor’ Season 4 Is Coming To Acorn TV

It has been a while since a new season of the crime drama, “Jack Taylor” premiered. The third and to-date latest season initially aired back in 2016. Well, a time table has been set for the release date of Season 4! Jack Taylor is coming back via Acorn TV and within the next 9 months.

The private eye will return for a fourth season sometime this year on the streaming service, Acorn TV. An exact premiere date (month and day) has not been announced yet, as 2019 is the current projection according to the streamer. Season 4 will continue following Iain Glen’s charismatic character as he battles issues both personal and professional.

The season, like its previous, will be comprised of three (3) feature-length episodes. In other words, three movies! Knowing that Jack Taylor will be back and within the definitive time frame of 2019 is phenomenal news. The series underwent some massive changes in Season 3. While missed, the show managed to not only survive but thrive in spite of them.

For those who may have yet to catch up on the series, a little background information. Jack Taylor stars “Game of Thrones” scene-stealer Iain Glen as the gruff yet loveable eponymous detective. An ex-cop, the story follows Jack as he works in the private sector of Galway, Ireland.

He investigates a different crime in each episode. Jack has been aided in those investigations by two different and equally loveable sidekicks, one in the first two seasons and a new one in Season 3. All the while sharing a complicated relationship with Officer Kate Noonan, his former colleague in the police force (Gardai) who tends to help him out.

Of note are some casting changes that take place with that role. Nora-Jane Noone plays Kate in the first two seasons. Siobhán O’Kelly took over the part in Season 3.

As stated above, episodes of “Jack Taylor” are feature-film length, so they are more like TV movies than a traditional episodic drama that runs from 45 minutes to an hour. As of now, there is the equivalent of nine movies streaming. The series is an adaptation of Ken Bruen’s bestselling crime fiction novels.

Iain Glen truly gets a chance to shine front and center as the ornery, complex lead. As he does on “Game of Thrones,” Glen has tremendous chemistry with all of his co-stars and the character of Jack Taylor provides him with multiple layers to play.

The way the mysteries are approached adds to the series’ quality. While in pursuit of solving them, the show never loses sight of its troubled character. They do tend to trend towards the darker side of things, so keep that in mind. This is a much more intense series than Tom Selleck’s also-entertaining “Jesse Stone” series.

As someone who binged the entire series (so far), shortly after Season 3 started streaming, Jack has been sorely missed. To know that he will be back sometime this year is a great comfort. However, nebulous that timeline may be, it is a release date that puts a definitive expectation on things. Cannot wait to have Jack back!

You can currently watch Seasons 1 through 3 of “Jack Taylor” on Acorn TV.

Daenerys’ Last Words To Jorah On ‘Game Of Thrones’ Were The Perfect Farewell

Jorah died a hero’s death during the Battle of Winterfell, but Daenerys’ loyal advisor and friend made one final appearance during Sunday night’s episode as the survivors paid their respects to those who had fallen. But along with all the tears that were shed, Dany whispered last words to Jorah on Game of Thrones during his final few moments of screen time. However, viewers were unable to hear what exactly it was that she said to him, surrounding that heartfelt goodbye with tinge of mystery. Luckily, actor Iain Glen, who played Ser Jorah on the series, opened up about that scene during a recent interview with Entertainment Weekly and hinted a bit about what it was that his costar Emilia Clarke actually said to him in that moment.

It turns out that whatever it was that Clarke said, was something that she herself was able to decide upon on her own. In the script, no actual words were given for her to say. According to EW, there was a line in the stage directions that read something to the effect of: “Daenerys whispers something to him that he’ll never hear and we’ll never know…” So it was entirely up to Clarke how she wanted to approach that final farewell. Did she say something sentimental to Glen? Did she crack a joke to help cut the tension or lighten the mood? They are friends in real life after all, so it’s not completely out of the question.

Here’s the thing, though: the whole point of that intimate interaction was so that these characters could have something exist just between the two of them, without anyone else being a part of it — including fans. So naturally, Glen didn’t want to just come out and say what it was that Clarke whispered to him, but he did tease the sentiment behind the words.

“It’s something entirely sincere and true to the moment and something that I’ll never forget,” Glen told EW. And while he knows that this is a question that fans will continue to ask him for many years to come, the actor is ready and willing to keep this little piece of information entirely to himself, adding: “I’ll always cherish it because it’s something no one will ever know but the two of us. And that’s a memory to hold onto.”

With that in mind, it’s safe to say Clarke wasn’t attempting to make Glen laugh with any silly anecdote or anything while this scene was being filmed. Perhaps Clarke told Glen what a pleasure it had been working with him for all of these years. Or maybe she remained in character during this off-mic moment and had Dany promise Jorah that his death wouldn’t be in vain, or that her victory of the Iron Throne would be done in his honor.

As of now, Clarke and Glen are staying mum on the details, but maybe over time the truth of what she said will finally be revealed. (Or maybe if we’re lucky, Dany told Jon Snow about it — lord knows that guy can’t keep a secret to save his life.) Fans may learn what those last words were at some point, but for the time being it’s just one more Game of Thrones mystery that needs to be solved.

Curtain Call: Iain Glen

Among the many victims of the Night King’s assault on Winterfell was none other than Ser Jorah Mormont, one of the longest running characters on Game of Thrones and Daenerys Targaryen’s loyal right hand. Portrayed by veteran Scottish actor Iain Glen, Ser Jorah was put through the ringer in service to the queen he loved, and although that love was never returned in quite the way he wanted, Jorah appeared to die a happy man, having found redemption serving a woman he felt worthy of the Iron Throne. Like his character, Glen’s steady performance never wavered in quality, and for that, we thank him.

Appearing in the very first episode of the show, Jorah quickly ensconced himself at Daenerys’ side, providing a friendly bridge between her homeland of Westeros and her adopted land of Essos. Glen’s weathered but trustworthy face put audience members and Daenerys at ease, but unfortunately, he wasn’t always the loyal knight he would become. At the start, Jorah was informing on Dany for King Robert Baratheon.

But Jorah would soon come to love Daenerys and abandon any work for the Iron Throne, even defending Dany from an assassination attempt midway through the first season. Likewise, it was Jorah, and Jorah alone, who would defend Dany when Khal Drogo died of an infected wound. Glen’s cool and collected confrontation with one of Drogo’s bloodriders was a lesson in staying calm in the face of danger.

Season 2 saw Jorah confess his feelings for Daenerys while helping her navigate the viper pit that was Qarth, feelings that were never reciprocated. Glen’s steady performance, now mixed with an awkward longing for Daenerys, was one of the few highlights of that storyline. Glen and Emilia Clarke worked very well together, and the often unspoken tension between the characters made even their mundane conversations worth watching. Jorah’s interactions with the mysterious Quaithe were also a highlight.

Things would pick up for Ser Jorah in season 3, as Dany set about liberating Slaver’s Bay. Suddenly, Glen got to play off two new additions to Daenerys’ inner circle: Ser Barristan Selmy and Daario Naharis. Both were rivals of sorts for Jorah, Barristan because he could tell Dany about Westeros and Daario because Dany was enamored of him. Through it all, Glen projected confidence, but still made sure we could see the insecurity gnawing at his insides.

But Jorah was always Dany’s most trusted adviser, at least until she found out about his early spying and exiled him from her presence. Their confrontation in the throne room of Meereen was painful to watch, as Jorah is clearly desperate beyond measure to stay by Dany’s side. Glen shines here, as does Clarke, and Jorah’s subsequent exile left us all saddened for the aging knight.

Jorah rebounded in season 5, capturing Tyrion in Volantis before returning to Meereen to present his gift to Dany. In the process, Jorah would contract greyscale, a seemingly incurable skin disease, that would drive him for the next couple of seasons. He comes before Dany again and is once again banished, but like any good stalker hopeless romantic, Jorah never takes no for an answer. Battling in the gladiator games of Meereen, Jorah is in a perfect spot to protect Dany when the Sons of the Harpy attack. Glen’s glare switches from hopeful to furious at the sight of someone attacking Daenerys. Him launching a spear into the gallery is a highlight of a very exciting sequence.

Season 6 saw Jorah set off alongside Daario to rescue Daenerys, and while their adventures are fun, it’s his reunion with Daenerys, and her subsequent decree that he find a cure for his greyscale, that is the high point of Jorah’s season 6 arc. Finally, he and his queen are reconciled. Likewise, while his interactions with Samwell Tarly at the Citadel in season 7 were enjoyable, as was his expedition north of the Wall, it’s Glen’s scenes with Clarke that are again outstanding, particularly when Jorah arrives on Dragonstone cured of greyscale.

Season 8 wasn’t heavy on the Jorah front; his conversation with Daenerys regarding Tyrion and Sansa was essentially a signal that his character would not be long for Westeros. Before he went however, Glen would deliver one last epic performance, defending Clarke from the army of the dead, refusing to die himself until his beloved khaleesi was safe from harm.

Glen’s performance is never better than when he’s acting opposite Clarke, and much the same could be said of her. The pair had a chemistry rare on Thrones in that it lasted virtually the entire series.

Jorah final moment came in “The Last of the Starks,” where he was one body of many set alight following the Battle of Winterfell. Daenerys whispered something into his ear. The script was left blank, allowing Clarke to come up with the dialogue herself. Glen was mum on what she said, telling Entertainment Weekly only that, “It’s something entirely sincere and true to the moment and something that I’ll never forget.”

Iain Glen ‘snogged’ by Game of Thrones fans

‘Game of Thrones’ star Iain Glen always gets “snogged” by fans in the street.

The 57-year-old actor – who has son Finlay, 25, with ex-wife Susannah Harker and daughters Mary, 11, and Juliet, seven, with partner Charlotte Emmerson – finds it bizarre that women “attack” him and just want to “hold” him when they see him out and about.

He said: “They’ll attack you. They’ll just grab you and start snogging you without invitation. They just want to hold you.”

But the ‘Game of Thrones’ actor – who bowed out of his role as Ser Jorah Mormont on Sunday’s (28.04.19) episode of the fantasy drama series – has found a way to dodge the unwanted attention and tries to travel by bicycle whenever he can.

He told Esquire.com: “I don’t know what it is. They stop looking. They don’t associate actors with bicycles. So [I] just always sneak out the back, get a bicycle, and find a hickey restaurant on the outskirts of town. That’s my modus operandi.”

Jorah died protecting his beloved queen, Daenerys Targaryen, during the Battle of Winterfell in this week’s episode and Iain is “very happy” with the journey his former slave trader alter ego has been on.

He said: “I feel very happy with his story arc. When we read all six episodes before we started at the beginning, in a big room in Northern Ireland – Belfast – I thought the writers had managed it incredibly well and thoroughly, in terms of looking after everyone.

“It’s one of the hard things when you write big, sweeping, epic dramas like this. How do you look after everyone’s storyline, individually?”

In season five, Jorah contracted deadly greyscale and as the disease spread, Iain had to spend increasing time getting prosthetics fitted before filming, taking up to eight hours a day at its peak.

But despite leaving him sleep deprived, the actor didn’t mind – because it reminded him of taking drugs.

He said: “It was like coming in at midnight and being ready to shoot at eight, to then do the ten-hour day.

“It reminded me of some of the drugs I’ve taken. At university, I was pretty spaced out–but in a nice, helpful, acting way.”
